Susan Brewer-Osorio, PhD
Assistant Professor
University of Arizona
Tucson, USA
Welcome
I am a political scientist and Latin Americanist, and an Assistant Professor in the School of Global Studies at the University of Arizona.
As a scholar, I study how international policies shape peacebuilding and social resistance in Latin America. My current projects examine how former rebels transition to nonviolent activism and how communities resist harmful drug-control policies. Drawing on intensive fieldwork in Colombia and Bolivia, I show how these struggles can open up new pathways toward peace and social justice. I aim to produce research that speaks to policymakers while also supporting community-led efforts to build peace from the ground up.
My work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, including American Political Science Review, International Peacekeeping, Conflict, Security & Development, and the Journal of Latin American Studies, among others. You can find links to my publications under the Research tab, and learn more about my book project, Peace without Surrender, on the Book Project page.
In addition to research, I teach courses on Latin American politics and development, conflict and peace, resistance movements, and U.S. foreign policy in Latin America. For more on my teaching profile, go to the Teaching tab.
I am also the Director of a Security and Peacebuilding Study Abroad Program in Colombia and serve on the executive board of the International Peace Research Association Foundation and the executive committee of the International Studies Association’s Peace Studies Section.
